Introduction to an indecisive girl

(Arlo rocking a bun, personal photo)

Hello! My name is Kennedie Milligan and I am a senior at the University of Oklahoma. I am a Communication major and a Women and Gender Studies minor. I am also pre-nursing. These three things may seem like a random grouping, but I have a lot of interests and am slightly indecisive, so this is what I have come up with.

I was born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, but I went from 3rd grade to high school in Broken Arrow and that is where my parents still live today. I have 3 brothers, and from my older brother I have 3 nieces. My entire family is pretty much in Oklahoma and has been my entire life. There is not a lot I am sure of in life, but I am sure that I need out of this state.

I am graduating (hopefully) in December and then I am (even more hopefully) going to nursing school. I want to go to a accelerated program for my BSN out of state because I am afraid if I don’t leave now then I will never get out. I just decided to do nursing last August (hence the extra semester of undergrad to get my prereqs in) and so I am a little late to that game. I have always known that I wanted to help people, and thought that I would do that through nonprofit work, but when my friend went into nursing I realized there was a more practical way of helping people that didn’t involve making no money and starving to death.

I don’t have a lot of hobbies, although I do like to try new things. I really love concerts at small venues and hanging out with my dog. She is a goldendoodle who I adopted last August. She is 13 months old and a terror. Her name is Arlo James (and her instagram is @arloisweird). She is definitely queen of my apartment and I do not know what I would do without her. I also have a hamster named Hercules who keeps us company as well.  We are a random bunch for sure, but we keep each other sane, or maybe they just keep me sane and I annoy them all the time. All the same, I am enjoying my last year at OU and excited for this semester.

  1. Hi Kennedie! As soon as I read your title, I already knew we had something in common! I have lived in Oklahoma my entire life too and I really want to venture out to new places but I feel like I would miss my family too much. I wish you lots of luck on getting into nursing school and finding another state that suits you. Your goldendoodle is too adorable, I also have a goldendoodle at home.

  2. Hi Kennedie! We are two peas in a pod, I can to OU for pre-nursing but then switched to Psychology. My main goal was just to help people and I couldn't decide are first how I would do that. You sound like you have a very fully and happy life ahead of you. Your puppy is also adorable and I love the little bun you gave Arlo. I also have puppies and they can make any day better even when I am away from my family. I was also raised around the same area you were, I am from Collinsville!
I wish you the best of luck!

  3. Oh, your Arlo is such a cutie, Kennedie! Maybe she can star in a story that you write for the class. The bun hairstyle is quite the thing in India: keep an eye out for it when you look at Indian paintings and other illustrations of the epic. It's a very popular look for sages and heroes! And your combination of major, minor and career plans sound really wonderful. The theme of helping and healing is one that you will see in the epics, and one of the treasures that was created at the great Churning of the Ocean was Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurvedic medicine. You can learn all about him here: Wikipedia: Dhanvantari ... he might be someone to consider for a project in this class, along with other great healers of the Indian tradition, like the Goddess Manasa ... a goddess of snakes who can be dangerous, but who can also help in the curing snakebite!

  4. Hey Kennedie, I have taken quite a few courses in Women and Gender Studies and have loved every single one of them. I also had changed my major, so I have been in school for a while and used the term "hopefully" graduating a lot. Don't worry it will come sooner than you realize and then you won't want to be heading into the real world in less than four months. I am getting more nervous as the days go by. Good luck in your classes this semester and getting into nursing school.

  5. Hi Kennedie!

I think it's so cool how you have woven together three of your passions to study and help people as you move forward in your career. I think that your major and minor will give you a special insight into the nursing future that not a lot of other nurses have, and I can see you being really relatable to your patients. When I was in high school, I was in the hospital for a couple of weeks and I remember one nurse in particular who was super special to me, I will never forget how much she cared about me and how she made such a big impact in my life just by talking with me and listening to me even though I was only a teenager. I think it seems like you'll be that kind of nurse to really make a difference in people's lives!

  6. Hello!

I can definitely relate to wanting to get out while you can! I've lived in Oklahoma for all of my life, and once I did a study abroad program I knew I had to leave once I graduated otherwise I would never experience the world. I really admire that you're so diverse! I am very indecisive as well and have changed my major numerous times, from health to education to business. I hope you have a great semester and last year at OU!

  7. Hello Kennedie, my name's Naomee. Your dog is so cute! Also, I am pursuing pre-medical studies so I can relate to your dilemma on whether or not to go out of state following undergrad. I think the best thing to keep in mind is do whatever makes you the happiest. I love concerts as well and I try to attend one at least every couple of months. I wish you the best of luck with graduating with your BSN!

  8. Hi Kennedie, it's nice to meet you! I loved reading everything you posted. I am pursuing medicine as well, and I am en-route to PA school next year *hopefully*. I love that you chose majors that you enjoy rather than only drowning in science. You will have the rest of your live to bury yourself in medical books! I hope you have a good semester!

  9. Hi Kennedie! That is an interesting grouping of majors, and it's awesome that you are building a career in helping others. I'd imagine that you are pretty busy with all those classes, and I'm impressed that you have time to take care of your dog. I have always wanted to get a dog, but I am afraid I won't have enough time to take care of it if I get one. Good luck this semester and with graduating in December!

  10. Hey Kennedie!
First off, congratulations on being a senior this year! I think it’s so cool that you are planning on going to nursing school. I’m also planning on going into the medical field and I agree that it’s a practical way to help others and it will be rewarding. Further, I really like the design and layout of your blog. I hope your having a great semester so far and I can’t wait to see what else you add to your blog.

  11. Hello Kennedie. You picked a nice title. I was born in Tulsa and from the 4th grade on went to Broken Arrow. We may have seen each other at some point. We both want to do nonprofit work, but like money. It may have taken you longer than some, but I see nothing wrong with changing the path you were going down. I wish you the best of luck with your semester and look forward to your stories.

  12. Hello there, Kennedie! Nice Introduction you got there better than mine and congrats on being senior this year! I am also senior and this year and can't wait to graduate. You really have guts to pick medical field because I tried doing science related major but didn't work out for me so I picked business related major and my major is MIS.

  13. Hi Kennedie! First off, your dog, Arlo, is adorable. I love goldendoodles! It is also cool that you have a hamster. I used to have a guinea pig named Boo! I really admire that you are taking an unconventional route to nursing school. My plan is to apply to both PA school and an accelerated BSN program so I can relate! It was nice meeting you and have a great rest of the semester!

  14. Hey Kennedie! It is great to meet you! I totally understand about needing to get out of Oklahoma. When I turned 18, I made my first exchange in Korea. I tried to get as far away as possible. But, the longer that I was gone, the more I missed OKC. I never thought that would happen. Good luck with your graduation.

  15. Hey Kennedie! Crazy to think the entire semester has gone by and I am only just now coming to your introduction post! I hope your semester went well and that you are looking forward to your last semester at OU! I understand needing to get out asap. I am in the position when I can finally leave, and now I'm having second thoughts. Whereas if you had asked me 6 months aho, there would not have been a doubt in my mind I wanted to leave Oklahoma. Weird how life works out...

  16. Hey, Kennedie, nice to meet you! The picture of your dog is adorable. My dog also has an Instagram, follow @earlthetripod if you're interested! I too have an odd assortment of animals in my apartment: a rat, 2 cats, and a very large dog. I also really relate to being indecisive, I changed majors 4 times before I found where I needed to be. I also relate to wanting to get out of Oklahoma. I am applying to grad school in Boston among other places. I hope the last bit of your semester goes well.

  17. Hi Kennedie! It’s crazy that the semester Is basically over and I’m still meeting new people in this class. I would have thought having your whole family in Oklahoma would be a reason to stay, but I understand wanting to get out. There are a lot of things that go on here that drive me crazy. I took a trip to Texas over spring break and it was a very tempting thought that I could actually live there. Anyways, best of luck with finals, nursing school, and life in general!

  18. Hi Kennedie! First off, Arlo is so adorable! I want a standard poodle once I graduate and get a real job. I can totally understand wanting to get out of the state you have lived in your whole life. I grew up mostly in Texas, and when I graduated from high school I headed to San Francisco to study. It was great! However, I ended up getting a job in Austin and then here in Oklahoma City, so I'm back in this part of the world. Haha.

  19. Oh my god Kennedie your dog is so ridiculously cuuuuute!
I don’t think those major and minor combos are unrelated. They seem to complement each other well. I’m like that too, though. The world is so interesting it’s hard to pick just one field of study!!
I’m from BA too! I probably graduated way before you but still. Well good luck graduating girl and say hi to your hamster for me. ;)

  20. Hi Kennedie! First of all, THANK YOU for sharing the puppy photo! My heart genuinely was warmed to see that. I can see the positive side to having a dog in college, so much love and comfort on every hard day and a loyal companion through it all. I am thankful you like to travel! That is an exciting desire to have, and so many places to explore with that as well! I'm excited for you to graduate and go do incredible things!

  21. Hey there Kennedie! I love your dog! My cousin has a goldendoodle and they are cute dogs! Arlo looks like she is a good dog. I am also a senior this year, and I'll actually be graduating in T-minus 9 days. Which is exciting. I wish you good luck on your last semester and hope you get in nursing school!

  23. Hey Kennedie , Reading your introduction the first thing I seen was your fur baby and all my friends know how I feel about animals. Your introduction was fun to read. it was straight to the point with a lot of information. I graduate too in December hopefully and I hope once you apply to nursing school you get it, I know it is tough to get into so good luck to you.
